After making history as New York City’s newly elected mayor, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani celebrated his victory with a taste of Nepal. Following his win, Mamdani visited Laliguras Bistro, a popular Nepali restaurant in Jackson Heights, where he enjoyed a comforting meal of momo, chow mein, potatoes, and milk tea.
Mamdani, who defeated strong opposition — including efforts from former U.S. President Donald Trump — became New York’s first Muslim and South Asian–origin mayor, marking a proud moment for immigrant communities across the city.
Sharing the moment on X (formerly Twitter), Mamdani posted photos of his lunch, writing that after a morning filled with interviews and meetings, the highlight of his day was dining with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) at Laliguras Bistro.
Located in one of New York’s most diverse neighborhoods, Jackson Heights is home to a vibrant Nepali, Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani community — making Mamdani’s choice of restaurant a heartfelt nod to his South Asian roots.
