Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja was more than a record-breaking climber. For many people in Nepal, he became a reminder that our biggest limits are often the ones we place on ourselves.
Born in Nepal and later serving with the British military, Nims brought an unusual combination of discipline, courage and determination to mountaineering. In 2019, he achieved what once seemed almost impossible—climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just six months and six days. His achievement placed a Nepali climber at the centre of the world’s mountaineering conversation.
But perhaps his greatest contribution was not a number or a record. It was the confidence he gave to others. He showed that Nepali climbers were not simply the people who supported expeditions on the world’s highest mountains. They could lead, compete, set records and redefine what was possible.
Nims Dai’s story also carried something deeply familiar to Nepalis—the willingness to keep moving forward even when the path looks impossible. His determination became an inspiration far beyond the climbing community.
As we remember him, we remember not only the mountains he climbed, but the mindset he left behind: dream bigger, prepare harder and never decide that something is impossible before trying.
The Himalayas were the place where Nims Dai made history, and they will forever remain part of his story.
PokharaGuide pays tribute to Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja—a remarkable Nepali whose ambition reached far beyond the peaks he conquered.
Rest in peace, Nims Dai. Your journey will continue to inspire the next generation.
